I haven't worn earrings in ten years but my hole is infected?

I have not had a pair of earrings in my ears since 2000. About twice a year though, one of my earring holes will get very infected. Pus will drain from my hole and then it usually clears up in a week or so. Why is this? Again NO earrings have been in my ears for over a decade.
